Dad given 90 per cent chance of survival dies of cancer days after his wedding

Paddy Dowling’s testicular cancer spread to his brain and despite the cancer having a 90% survival rate, the dad of three from Belgrave, Tamworth, has died aged just 33

A dad-of-three told he had a 90 per cent chance of beating testicular cancer has died aged just 33, after tumours were later found in his brain.

Paddy Dowling married wife Shannon at their home just days before he died after the couple moved their wedding date forward from next April. Labourer Paddy, originally from Birmingham, had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in January but was told to be optimistic as there was a 90 per cent chance of survival. Despite chemotherapy and radiotherapy medics at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital found three tumours in his brain over the next few months.

Paddy and Shannon, got married on Thursday, August 31 at their home in Belgrave, Tamworth, with his children, aged nine, four and three, and their closest family looking on. Paddy made his vows from a hospital bed and although there was no wedding dress, speeches or celebration toasts, they did share their vows.

Paddy died in a hospice early on Sunday, September 10 with his new wife, siblings and closest relatives by his side. His ister-in-law Gemma Chatterley told Birmingham Live: “Paddy was the most gentle person who would do anything for anyone; he would have given them his last fiver. Everyone who knew him, loved him because he was such a nice, genuine guy. Paddy was a family man who was devoted to his children and was so kind, caring, helpful and always polite.”
