A father is fighting for his life on a ventilator after being struck down by a mystery bug in the Philippines.
Armando Ramos, 53, had visited Manilla from his home in Chula Vista, San Diego, following the death of his mother. Ramos, father to three daughters, spent the first few days making funeral arrangements and organising a service for his late mother.
However, the software engineer was struck down by flu-like symptoms, including a sore throat and fatigue. Five days after first falling unwell, Ramos was rushed to hospital when he started suffering chest pains and had difficulty breathing.
A screen grab shows a video call with his three daughters a day after being admitted before his condition worsened. Initially diagnosed with pneumonia, Ramos was intubated and placed on a ventilator within days.
