Today Liverpool Crown Court heard that Mr Twigg and his then girlfriend Sophie Reid were walking through Lincoln Square in Widnes at around 3.45pm on July 26 last year. They were taking their five-year-old daughter to the park, with their newborn baby in the buggy. Prosecutor Martyn Walsh described how a blue sports car approached them from the direction of Cedar Avenue. Sumner emerged from the passenger's side, confronted his victim in a "dispute over money" then hit him twice to the temple. In a statement read out to the court on his behalf, Mr Twigg recalled being grabbed by the shirt by Sumner and "the next thing waking up in the neurology ward" ( Liverpool Echo) Ms Reid intervened, but the 22-year-old pushed her to the floor and caused the pram to roll into the road. Thankfully it was retrieved without the boy inside being hurt. Shortly afterwards, Mr Twigg collapsed as the defendant - of Moorwood Crescent in Clock Face, St Helens - was driven away. The complainant was rushed to Whiston Hospital and later transferred to the Walton Centre due to severity of his injuries, where medical staff "might well have saved his life".
