Cruise ship’s arrival in town boosts population by 50pc – but blights views

Vessel docks in Fowey bringing around 1,000 passengers to the area, however some residents are not impressed

A Cornish town has seen its population jump by 50 per cent thanks to the arrival of a cruise ship.

The Spirit of Adventure, operated by Saga Cruises, docked in the picturesque town of Fowey on Friday, making it the largest ever ship to visit.

Pictures show the cruise liner dwarfing the surrounding hilltops that have houses and shops tumbling down to the River Fowey, with it weighing about 60,000 tons and spanning 236 metres in length.

It brought around 1,000 passengers to the town – which is already popular with tourists and heavily reliant on income, but has a population of just over 2,000.
