Legendary pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both secured transfers this year as their battle to be the greatest of all time draws to a close in Saudi Arabia and the United States
Major League Soccer players would often debate over which of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo would eventually join David Beckham’s Inter Miami, it has been revealed.
The legendary pair are synonymous with each other after their battles for Barcelona and Real Madrid as well as their Ballon d’Or domination over the past couple of decades. Both have since moved on from La Liga as they wind down their careers and it’s since become clear that players in the US could not help but speculate whether either would move stateside.
Of course, there is a real tradition of superstars moving to MLS, with household names such as the aforementioned Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic having moved to the US during their careers. Likewise, the free-spending Saudi Pro League has been able to attract a host of elite stars to the Middle East in recent times including Ronaldo, as well as Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez.
In the case of Inter Miami, their ambitious owners have made no secret of their desire to bring world-renowned talents to the DRV PNK Stadium, with the signing of Messi the realisation of this dream. The 36-year-old rebuffed a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to secure his move to South Beach but it appears that many MLS stars had already predicted that the Argentine icon would eventually move to Florida.
