At the first Republican primary debate, Chris Christie delivered a stinging burn to his rival Vivek Ramaswamy. “I’ve had enough already tonight,” said the former New Jersey governor, “of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT.”

Indeed this curious political outsider, now polling third in the race and closing in on the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, for second, is what would happen if you fed an AI bot the instruction “turn Donald Trump into a tech bro”.

At just 38, Ramaswamy is in many ways a typical millennial: a strict vegetarian, he favours a uniform of black T-shirts and sneakers, loves hip-hop – at college rapping Eminem covers under the name Da Vek – and once took a stand-up comedy course. He’s a graduate of both
