Concussion subs could be made permanent as early as March

Concussion substitutions in football are likely to become permanent as early as next March, The Times has learned.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) will review the results of the present trial early next year and decide whether the protocol that has been trialled in 270 competitions across the world, including the Premier League, since 2019 becomes permanent.

This means it could become part of the Laws of the Game as early as March, when the new MLS season starts in the US. However, the use of temporary concussion substitutions, which have been called for by the former England captain Alan Shearer, are unlikely to be part of the law change.

At present, teams have two green cards they can play to substitute a player
