When he assumed control of the force in September 2018, Drew Harris was asked if he felt nervous about his appointment as the first outsider to be made garda commissioner. “This is not my first rodeo,” Harris said in a jarringly self-promotional remark before he stood up to address a huddle of journalists and broadcasters.
At the time the reputation of the force was in tatters and Harris’s appointment was said to be a new direction for the garda, similar to the appointment of Bill Bratton as commissioner of the New York Police Department.
Harris was hired to oversee the implementation of sweeping reforms suggested by the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland (CoFPI).
