Rishi Sunak may have killed his chances of dialogue with China, the country’s state media declared hours after his meeting with President Xi was cancelled.
Sunak had been due to meet Xi in Bali yesterday, and he would have been the first British prime minister to do so in nearly five years amid worsening relations between London and Beijing. The meeting was abandoned after news of a missile hitting Poland, which dominated the final day of the G20 summit as western leaders considered how to respond.
Global Times, a Communist Party newspaper that is considered a mouthpiece for Xi’s government, suggested Beijing was angered by the cancellation and Britain’s recent “provocative behaviours” over Taiwan.
