China planted spies in Canadian parliament to influence policy

Intelligence sources are also investigating a secret network of Chinese ‘overseas police stations’ in Toronto

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused China of playing “aggressive games” with democracies amid reports that Beijing has interfered in Canada’s federal elections.

Mr Trudeau’s comments came after intelligence sources warned that Beijing funded a “clandestine network” of election candidates in Canada’s 2019 election and planted spies in MPs’ offices to influence policy in China’s favour.

The allegations came just days after federal police also announced it was investigating a secret network of Chinese “overseas police stations” in Toronto, part of China’s efforts to secretly round up dissidents and criminals abroad.

“We have taken significant measures to strengthen the integrity of our elections processes and our systems, and we’ll continue to invest in the fight against election interference, against foreign interference of our democracy and institutions,” Mr Trudeau said Monday.
