China criticises UK after its new embassy plans fall through

China has accused the government of failing to fulfil its “international obligations” after walking away from plans to build the UK’s largest embassy in the historical home of the Royal Mint.

The Chinese government bought the 18th-century grade II listed property – which has more than five acres of land and is near the Tower of London – in 2018 with ambitious plans to develop its new base in London. But it is now understood to have dropped the proposal altogether after deciding not to appeal against a ruling by the local council to turn the project down.

Under the original plans the Chinese had intended to partially bulldoze some of the buildings and refurbish and restore others for development that would include staff accommodation,
