Chelsea building specialist team to lead plans for Stamford Bridge upgrade

Chelsea are forming a team of architectural specialists tasked with leading plans to create a stadium worthy of an elite European club.

The new Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership has recruited Janet Marie Smith, responsible for renovating a group of America’s most famous stadiums, to work alongside London-based architects, some of whom were involved in drawing up Roman Abramovich’s ditched plans for Stamford Bridge.

Jonathan Goldstein, the British property tycoon and Chelsea co-owner, is taking a leading role in addressing plans for Chelsea’s new home and has already presented possible options to the board.

Chelsea’s new owners have explored Abramovich’s drawings, a 60,000-capacity “faceted polygon”-shaped stadium “inspired by Westminster Abbey”, which received planning permission in 2018 and was originally scheduled to be finished in April last
