Willian was out of contract this summer and according to ESPN Brasil, United and Chelsea both held initial talks about signing him ahead of the new season. It's claimed that negotiations were not advanced with Chelsea and United as both clubs regarded Willian as a back-up target in their summer transfer plans. Willian also turned down an offer to join Nottingham Forest, who avoided relegation from the Premier League last season.
