‘Cheap and cheerful suitcase has stood the test of time and every traveller should buy this one’

My American Tourister suitcase has been on some big adventures with me and has lasted several years

In 2019 I embarked on a road trip across the Southern states of the USA, with nothing more than some good friends, a Lonely Planet guide book and a shiny new suitcase.

Reticent to spend hundreds of pounds on a suitcase that would have to endure several flight transfers, numerous hotel bellboys and the constant bumps and knocks of repeated car hire, I opted for a cheap and cheerful hard-sided spinner case that I hoped would last the trip.

Imagine my surprise then, to discover that the medium size American Tourister suitcase that I hastily ordered from John Lewis turned out to be the best investment in luggage I’ve ever made.

From Chicago to Nashville and on to Tupelo, Memphis, Somerville, Jackson and finally New Orleans, that £75 suitcase more than held its own. A true American Tourister by name, it really did stand up to the rigours of independent travel across three states and more than 900 miles, and further adventures in Spain and France, a school exchange trip and even the occasional Brit-based staycation.
