Carry On actor Leslie Phillips dies aged 98

The Carry On actor Leslie Phillips, best known for catchphrases such as “ding dong”, “well hello” and “I say”, has died aged 98.

The veteran performer’s wife Zara, 63, paid tribute to a “truly great showman” and “wonderful husband”.

Phillips may be better known to younger generations as the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films.

In a statement his wife said Phillips “was quite simply a national treasure. People loved him. He was mobbed everywhere he went. When we married he cheekily introduced me to the Press as royalty, insisting I was the new Zara Phillips and that I was related to the Queen.”
