The 25-year-old pulled over to check on the child and was on the phone with her brother's girlfriend at the time. They lost contact on the call, but the girlfriend described hearing Carlee scream. A frantic search effort was launched, until Carlee walked up to her front door two days later. Nothing is known about what happened to her in the meantime. Talitha and Carlos Russell, her parents, have now spoken out about their ordeal. Mum Talitha said: "Carlee has given detectives her statement so they can continue to pursue her abductor." When asked if she believes her daughter's kidnapper is still out there, Talitha said: "Absolutely." When police got to the scene they found her car running with many of her personal belongings inside. But they did not find Carlee or the child. Police said no children were reported missing during that time period. Carlee's parents waited in agony as police led a search for their daughter. They recalled receiving phoney messages from people claiming to have information about what happened. "There were actually just so many calls and texts from people who maliciously lied to us," said Talitha in an NBC News/Today interview. "I just didn't know people could be so evil." Carlee returned home alone on Saturday, July 15. She was alone and arrived on foot around 10.45pm - more than 48 hours after she disappeared.
