Car shortage threatens Sadiq Khan’s Ulez scrappage scheme

Only 1,500 cars on sale in London for less than £2,000 comply with pollution rules

Drivers in London seeking to use Sadiq Khan’s enhanced Ulez scrappage scheme face a shortage of vehicles for sale, experts have warned.

The controversial clean air regime will expand to cover the whole of Greater London at the end of the month and City Hall has announced a £50m cash injection to £110m scrappage initiative, along with more support for charities, small businesses and disabled people.

But there are only around 1,500 Ulez-compliant cars, which do not have to pay the £12.50 daily charge, on sale in and around London for less than the Mayor’s £2,000 scrappage scheme grant, according to data from Auto Trader.

Nathan Coe, the online vehicle reseller’s CEO, welcomed the additional funding to help Londoners transition to less polluting vehicles, but said “choice is limited” for people with lower budgets using the grant money from a scrapped car to purchase a greener second-hand alternative, amid surging prices.
