When attempting to attract tourists, some towns hold a festival or give the high street a lick of paint. For a small city in California, however, officials have decided that a new name is needed to draw more visitors.
Port Hueneme, home to about 21,000 people, is a shipping hub on the coast of Ventura County and receives approximately $11 billion in goods each year, but officials want it to be better known for a small strip of sand on its southern edge.
The city could be renamed Hueneme Beach if residents can be convinced to vote for it today.
City leaders argue that adding “beach” to the name will make tourists more inclined to visit. They estimate that the change would cost about $190,000,
