BT loses 126,000 broadband customers as new wave of challengers steal market share

Telecoms giant faces uncertain times amid the departure of its top boss and talks of a takeover

BT has lost 126,000 broadband customers in three months amid growing competition from rivals.

The telecoms giant saw its customer base tumble in the quarter to June as rival providers race to roll out full-fibre broadband networks and stop using old copper lines.

The former state monopoly said it expects its broadband base to decline by around 400,000 over the full year.

BT, the largest player in the market, said its full-fibre network now reaches 11m properties, putting it 44pc of the way to its target of reaching 25m homes by the end of 2026.
