Brits with Covid symptoms urged to ‘stay home’ as new Eris variant behind 1 in 4 cases

Covid cases have risen again across the UK, according to the latest government data – leading senior health bosses to once again urge that people with symptoms ‘stay at home’

People suffering from Covid symptoms have been urged to ‘stay at home’ following another rise in cases.

New figures released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show 10.8 per 100,000 of the population were recorded with the virus in the week leading up to August 14 – up from 9.3 cases for every 100,000 as of July 29.

Hospital admission rates have also increased in all age groups, except those aged 15 to 24, though remain low overall. People aged 85 years and over continue to have the highest admission rates, increasing to 32.63 per 100,000 – up from 20.49 per 100,000 in the previous report.

The data also shows that approximately one in four coronavirus cases that have been sequenced in labs now belong to the Eris strain, which has been spreading rapidly since arriving in the UK in May.
