British doctor sexually assaulted at WHO health summit speaks out

A WHO employee put a ‘firm hand’ on the 26-year-old’s bottom and touched her breast, in a case that exposes harassment in the UN

It was 3am when Dr Rosie James hit ‘tweet’. The 26-year-old had just returned to her hotel room after a packed day at the World Health Summit, but the evening’s events had left her angry, upset and feeling like a “piece of meat”.

“I was sexually assaulted by a @WHO [World Health Organization] staff tonight,” she wrote on Twitter. “This was not the first time in the global health sphere that this has occured (for MANY of us). I will be reporting it. So dissappointing + disheartening [sic].”

The alleged incident took place during networking drinks at the Berlin-based conference – a major event on the global health calendar which Dr James, a British Canadian junior doctor working in Stoke-on-Trent, had long been looking forward to.

It was roughly midnight and around 15 people were still in the hotel lobby, speaking about their work and the day’s highlights, when Dr James and a senior employee of the WHO started talking.
