Lewis Pugh, 53, a former maritime lawyer from Plymouth, Devon, has set off from Lake Tear of the Clouds in New York state and is now barrelling towards the city
An endurance athlete is swimming 315 miles to New York to spotlight the state of the world’s waterways and global warming.
Yesterday Brit Lewis Pugh, 53, began his marathon swim at Lake Tear of the Clouds, the source of the Hudson River in New York state. The former maritime lawyer from Plymouth, Devon, aims to arrive in Manhattan on September 13, to coincide with the UN General Assembly.
Pugh has swum in -1.7C water in Antarctica, dodged sharks in the Red Sea and been made ill by sewage while swimming the 202-mile length of the Thames. His latest feat will show the Hudson is cleaner than 50 years ago but will highlight how much more work is needed globally.
He said he has the world’s oceans change dramatically in 36 years. “I have spent 36 years in the world’s oceans and I have seen them change and change dramatically, especially in the Arctic and coral reefs across the world.
