Brexit is Labour’s Achilles heel – and Rishi has finally realised it

The pro-Brexit constituency in public opinion, always underestimated by pollsters, has not gone away

Rishi Sunak clearly doesn’t believe the idea put about by fashionable commentators that the British public is champing at the bit to be dragged back into the orbit of the European Union.

Instead, he leant heavily into Brexit in this speech, praising Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch for setting about deploying new freedoms to the advantage of British industry.

Many Leave voters may wonder how this fits in with the Windsor Framework given plenty of experts think that deal introduces a notable bias against the UK diverging from the way the EU does things.

But nonetheless it was reassuring to hear this Prime Minister, who supported the Leave campaign in a low-key way back in 2016, contrast his willingness to take advantage of Britain being able to run its own trading arrangements and much else besides with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s flip-flopping record.
