Boss donates kidney to stranger as dialysis machine used to clean drinking water

The 60-year-old man, who manages his local council’s sewage and wastewater treatment, chose to donate his kidney after he learned about the reality of life on dialysis.

Rony Zigler, 60, donated his kidney to a stranger, after working with a start-up that reuses kidney dialysis machines to recycle sewage water.

Rony, who lives in Israel, manages his local council’s sewage and wastewater treatment. He learned about the reality of life for dialysis patients after he was introduced to the machines as part of his work alongside the startup NUF Filtration.

“I’d thought about donating a kidney for a long time and was trying to understand if it was the right move,” Rony said.

“When I realised that I’d be able to live with one kidney, whilst ensuring someone else won’t need to go through a dialysis procedure, I decided to undergo the operation.
