Boost for campaign seeking public inquiry into rogue surgeon Sam Eljamel

The campaign to hold a public inquiry into a rogue surgeon who is believed to have harmed up to 200 patients has been boosted by news of a ministerial statement at Holyrood.

Professor Sam Eljamel is believed to be operating in Libya after he was suspended from NHS Tayside in 2013.

The health secretary Michael Matheson said a recent due diligence report from the NHS board into the former consultant neurosurgeon raised “serious issues of concern” and suggested he could be extradited back to Scotland. Matheson is due to give a ministerial statement on Eljamel in parliament.

Campaigners, many of whom suffered life-changing injuries, believe more than 200 patients may have been harmed by Eljamel, who worked for the Tayside health board between 1995 and
