Black Sabbath — The Ballet: when heavy metal meets pirouettes

It looks like any other rehearsal. A handful of dancers are casually flexing their limbs on the sidelines of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s airy studio, while in the centre others are focused on perfecting new moves. Yet this is no ordinary rehearsal because it is no ordinary ballet they are learning. The dancers are getting ready for the world premiere of a three-act production inspired by Black Sabbath, arguably Birmingham’s most famous cultural export, who have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. On September 23, heavy metal is meeting satin pointe shoes.
