Bill Maher breaks writers’ strike to bring back talk show

Bill Maher, the American comedian, has announced that he is bringing back his weekly talk show despite the Hollywood writers’ strike.

The writers walked out in May in a row over pay and conditions, alleging that the industry’s shift to streaming had left them poorer. Actors have been on strike since mid-July and have similar complaints.

With little hope of the strike ending soon, shows have started to announce returns, with Drew Barrymore receiving strong criticism for bringing back her daytime talk show this week.

Real Time with Bill Maher, which is broadcast weekly on HBO, is the latest to reveal plans for a return to the air, with the network saying that the first new episode will be broadcast on September 22. The
