Biden and Xi to meet ahead of G20

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping will meet today in their first face to face encounter as national leaders, at a time of growing diplomatic and military tension between the world’s two most powerful nations.

The presidents of the United States and China are due to come together this afternoon in advance of tomorrow’s Group of 20 summit meeting on the Indonesian island of Bali. Although no concrete breakthrough is expected at the meeting, it represents the highest level political encounter since East Asia began a slide towards what many in the region fear is a new Cold War-style confrontation.

Neither president has spoken in detail about his hopes for the meeting, but they will certainly discuss the future of the self-ruling island of Taiwan, which
