The first asylum seekers to be housed on the Bibby Stockholm barge will arrive as early as today as the government unveils a new crackdown on illegal migration.
Fines for employers and landlords who allow illegal migrants to work for them or rent their properties will be greatly increased under the biggest shake-up of civil penalties in years.
The penalty for employers, which was last increased in 2014, will be raised from £15,000 to £45,000 for each illegal worker. It will be as much as £60,000 for repeat breaches, up from £20,000.
Fines for landlords will jump from £1,000 to £10,000 per tenant, with a repeat breach triggering a penalty of up to £20,000. Fines for a lodger who does not have the right to
