It not only defines a property’s boundaries but can also provide privacy, security and a backdrop for plants and flowers . However, with constant exposure to the elements, a fence can easily become tired and worn over time. A fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference, transforming a fence from drab to fab in just a few hours. But with so many fence paint options available, it can be hard to know where to start. Taking to the Gardening UK Facebook page, Cindy Marney posted a picture of her fence painted green and said: ‘Do you think this fence colour is okay for a backdrop for my new border plants? Or should I paint it another colour?’ Gardening enthusiasts in the comments were in agreement that while the fence looked lovely in that shade, it doesn’t give justice to her plants. Sadie Fuller commented: ‘Looks nice, but I would have chosen more of a contrast as the foliage kind of disappears against the colour.’ Gardeners agreed that black is the best fence colour (Image: Getty) Instead, many suggested that Cindy paint her fence a darker colour – something like black. Sue CB wrote: ‘A darker shade like black would make your lovely plants stand out more, which would be good. ‘I think that plants and shrubs can get a bit lost when planted in front of a green fence.’ Wendy Farr replied: ‘Black, plants pop against it and it will make your garden look bigger. With green, everything will get lost on it.’ Looking for a new home, or just fancy a look? But if you like it that colour keep it like that.’ Bryan Horsey said: ‘Black makes everything pop and adds depth to the space.’ Raymond Carling agreed: ‘Black is best as it shows all plants up.’ Angela Slater, gardening expert from Hayes Garden World also claims that dark colours like black are ‘best’ for average-sized gardens. She explained: ‘Generally, a fence painted in dark colours makes an average-sized garden appear larger as it shifts the eye from the fence to the plants. ‘It will provide a foil to the colours of your plants and make any light-coloured flowers stand out; it will also give the illusion of depth to your plants.’
