‘Beautiful’ mum’s nose and jaw torn off when hay bales crushed her while feeding horses

Mum-of-five Rachael Howan was helping feed the horses on a friend’s horse farm when half-a-tonne of hay bales toppled over, landing on top of her and ripping off her nose and jaw in Kansas City, Missouri

A “beautiful” mum had her nose and jaw torn off when a half-tonne avalanche of hay bales crushed her while she was feeding horses.

Rachael Howan grew up on a farm as a young child and was used to watching her dad haul hay, so often helped out at her friend’s local horse farm. The 42-year-old went to help out and feed the horses as usual on the morning of June 13.

But tragedy struck when a tower of bales, weighing more than half a tonne, toppled on her – crushing her face. The mum-of-five believes the hay bales were stacked three high, and the accidental avalanche could have been caused by a vibration, heat, or even moisture changes in the air which made the hay swell.

As she suffocated underneath the bales, Rachael screamed for help. She lay there terrified, thinking only of her children as the upper bone of her jaw, the maxilla, had been torn away.
