The political editor was among 100 high-profile names, which included senior political figures, who were targeted
Chris Mason was reportedly on a list of VIPs to be hacked by an Indian cyber gang three weeks after he landed the job as BBC’s political editor.
The journalist, who was appointed to the role in April, was among 100 high-profile people including politicians who had been listed as targets for a gang working on behalf of investigators hired by autocratic states.
Mr Mason was featured in a list alongside Ignazio Cassis, the Swiss president, who had been targeted in May, and Philip Hammond, who was hacked after the Salisbury poisonings, according to the Sunday Times following a joint investigation with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
The report says that the gang was found to be working in a suburb of the Indian tech city of Gurugram under the name WhiteInt. Its clients are said to include private investigators with links to the City of London.
