The popular broadcaster confirmed his departure with a poignant message to his fans on Twitter. His message began: "After 35 years, I've decided to leave the BBC. "Time for a change. But what an adventure! I feel very lucky." Mike continued: "I'll be on Look East till Oct 6th ..and after that I haven't got a clue! "For now, I just want to say thanks to all my colleagues and to you the viewer/follower. Mike x." His post accompanied a side-by-side photograph of his appearance at the start of his broadcasting career with Look East and him in more recent times. Mike, often known as Liggo, joined the BBC in 1987 after starting in the world of broadcast journalism three years earlier. He worked in both Coventry and London, including a spell at ITV, before settling with the BBC, first hosting a Sunday breakfast show on BBC Radio Norfolk before working extensively on Look East. BBC spokesperson Robert Thompson said of his departure: "Over the last 35 years, Mike has made more than 6,500 TV reports for Look East. "He always gets the heart of a story and has a brilliant way with words." Many of his fellow journalists and viewers raced to send their well wishes to the star. ITV News correspondent Natalie Gray said: "We will certainly miss you, your humour and your wonderful storytelling. Good luck in whatever you decide to do Mike – very best wishes x."
