BBC local radio stations face big cuts to content from their area

Only breakfast and lunchtime programmes will be unique to each of the 39 stations under plans to reshape services

The BBC will on Monday announce cuts that will leave local radio stations with only a handful of programmes specific to their area, according to a report.

Only breakfast and lunchtime programmes will be unique to each of the 39 stations under the plans, sources told the Guardian.

This would leave output during the afternoons and evenings consisting of shows broadcast on multiple local stations, with weekend output, with the exception of sports coverage, also expected to be largely run on a regional basis.

Staff have been invited to calls from Monday onwards to hear “proposals to reshape BBC England into a full multimedia service” as the broadcaster tackles a major financial hole from the real-terms freeze to the licence fee and high levels of cost inflation.
