BBC apologises to Nigel Farage for reporting he didn’t have money for Coutts bank account

The former Ukip leader was furious after the broadcaster claimed that Coutts had closed his account because he was no longer wealthy enough

A senior BBC journalist has apologised to Nigel Farage for reporting he didn’t have enough money to hold an account at Coutts.

The BBC’s business editor Simon Jack suggested the private bank had closed his account for “falling below” its wealth limit.

But the former Ukip leader later acquired documents indicating the action had been taken by the NatWest Group-owned bank because it had found his public statements did “not align” with its values.

The BBC updated its original story last Friday as it acknowledged “that the information we reported – that Coutts’ decision on Nigel Farage’s account did not involve considerations about his political views – turned out not to be accurate”.
