Three Englishman join the same number of Frenchmen in our combined XV from the second set of fixtures
The All Blacks’ comeback at Murrayfield to record a sixth successive victory capped a fine second round of Autumn Internationals fixtures which incorporated five home wins of varying intensity and competitiveness for the other Six Nations sides, none better than France’s mettlesome defeat of world champions, South Africa. This is our combined XV from the weekend’s compelling action.
The Azzurri full-back was no one-hit wonder; and he is navigating the difficult second album with aplomb. After plunging the dagger into Welsh hearts in the 2022 Six Nations, he was the star once again as Italy registered their second win over a so-called ‘Tier one’ nation this calendar year. No one broke more tackles in the Italian victory over Australia, and he finished his two tries terrifically.
For the purposes of this side, Steward is shifted away from full-back because he finished on the right wing to accommodate Henry Slade in a backline rejig. There, he set up Marcus Smith’s second try with a kick down-field into space. Before that, he has scored England’s first against Japan before sparking numbers two and three thanks to a strong run and then a towering catch.
Fair to say that his switch from wing to centre has worked out quite well. The attacking side of his game was always going to work and he carried hard into Argentina for good ground as expected. But it’s his defensive work which seems so impressive, making 11 tackles against Argentina and learning how to defend in that area at a rapid pace.
