Carla Ward’s side suffered a dramatic 2-1 loss to Manchester United after Rachel Williams’ injury-time winner sunk 10-woman Villa at Villa Park – where they wore their home shirt despite being offered the chance to wear an alternative
Aston Villa women’s captain Rachel Corsie claimed they wanted to wear their controversial Castore home kit for their season opener against Manchester United at Villa Park.
Villa’s men’s and women’s teams have expressed misgivings over the home strip, which seemingly retains an inordinate amount of sweat as games wear on to make for cumbersome movement and an overall wet look. Talks have been held over cancelling the multi-year contract between the club and kit supplier Castore.
The women’s team reportedly expressed “dread” at the prospect of wearing the shirts in their opening against Man Utd on Sunday. But after the dramatic 2-1 defeat to Man Utd, Villa captain Corsie claimed that the players decided to wear the home strip despite the ongoing buzz within media and the fanbase.
Speaking after the match, Corsie said: “We wanted to wear the home shirt. It’s first game of the season so you want to be in your home kit.”
