Ask the Expert: ‘Is it safer to use an app rather than a key fob to lock my car?’

As the Telegraph’s motoring expert, I weigh in on your car dilemmas to save you money and make your driving life easier

Bearing in mind the increasing use of key-fob signal interception to steal cars, would I have better security if I used the Hyundai app on my smartphone instead of my fob to lock and unlock my Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Yes and no. The rise of so-called relay attacks, where a thief grabs the signal from your key fob when you activate it and then replicates the signal to gain access to the car has been well documented.

Some cars, particularly electric vehicles like your Ioniq 5, now come with apps that allow you to lock and unlock your car from your phone, and sometimes even start it remotely, too. On the face of it, this might seem like a brilliant alternative, and a good way to evade this type of theft.
