We were in a state of feverish excitement in my living room and had been since June. Would the new Premier League season mark the end of Stop This Flame by Celeste as the title music for Sky’s elite football programming? We had loved the song initially, with its Dave Brubeck-style opening and sexy vocals, but had become so jaded by it that it spoilt every big-match experience. Along came Burnley’s opening game against Manchester City on Friday and I texted my son, on holiday in Vancouver, that the flame had not been extinguished. That was mean of me. I should have let him have fun in blissful ignorance.
