Armored Core 6 is a step too far for From Software difficulty – Reader’s Feature

A reader is frustrated at the difficulty of Armored Core 6 and feels it crosses a line that Dark Souls 3 only just avoided.

There was a letter in the Inbox from a reader called Tom a couple of weeks ago, saying he wasn’t green to the FromSoftware games but was surprised by the difficulty of Armored Core 6 and I can relate to that. I was in over my head with the first mini-boss, the helicopter. I made a clown of myself by asking for tips to beat it. Everyone thought I meant the chapter one boss, but I did get some good advice that helped me get a feel for the weight and movement limitations of the mech and to forget i-frames which was a massive culture shock, let me tell you.

In the two or three weeks before Armored Core 6 released I was playing Dark Souls 3 for the first time and thinking more or less the same thing about that game as well. I’m not new to the Souls series but I kept hitting difficulty bottlenecks where enemies were one-shotting me. And not just early-game, before levelling up a bit and getting decent gear, it was consistent until I got past the twins. That’s a lot further into the game than it usually takes me to git gud.

Just getting to the shortcut near the twins boss room was a nightmare without co-op. It took a lot of trial and error to deal with the three characters that attack together, then rinse and repeat with the elite blue-cloaked Lothric knights a bit further on. The ones supported by a shed load of low rent enemies with crossbows using cover to take potshots, while others using spears and all that good stuff were attacking me from behind.

The difficulty is all over the place; the twins took three deaths to beat, Soul of Cinder took two and on the third attempt I kept Yuria alive to see the usurpation of the flame ending. She isn’t exactly a tank, she won’t win the fight for you or even see the second phase if you don’t have her back, but late game common enemies killing me over and over made it feel like I was being trolled by the developers and, let’s be honest, they are not above that.
