Maui county mayor Richard Bissen confirmed the rising death count to Honolulu television station KITV 4 Wednesday evening local time. 'As the firefighting efforts continue, 36 total fatalities have been discovered today amid the active Lāhainā fire,' a press release from the county said. 'No other details are available at this time.' A spokesperson said all of those who died were in the historic town of Lāhainā, West Maui, according to Hawaii NewsNow. At least three wildfires have been raging on the island of Maui since Tuesday, sending people swimming into the Pacific Ocean. 'This is a deeply sombre day,' Bissen said in an earlier statement. At least three wildfires have been raging on the island of Maui since Tuesday, sending people swimming into the Pacific Ocean.
The fires, now largely contained, have razed through a former royal capital reliant on tourism and wrecked some of Hawaii’s cultural landmarks.
