Antonio Conte must end this Spurs malaise or risk fan revolt

After their best start to a Premier League season ever, a combination of draws and ugly losses are blighting Spurs

The old Latin mottos can weigh heavily sometimes. Everton have had nisi satis nisi optimum (nothing but the best is good enough) on their shirts for years. To put it politely, the club has not always practised what it preached, given those shirts have been worn by Andy van der Meyde, Cuco Martina and Brett Angell.

Spurs’ equivalent is audere est facere: to dare is to do. That has a modern mirror in the Danny Blanchflower quote, ‘the game is about glory,” frequently flashed up on advertising hoardings at White Hart Lane old and new.

The full Blanchflower quote is worth revisiting, given its status as Tottenham’s unofficial written constitution. “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning,” he said. “It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.”

Unfortunately the choice at the moment under Antonio Conte is not about winning vs style, more scraping draws vs losing. His red card in Wednesday night’s Champions League group stage draw with Sporting Lisbon overshadowed a mild unease among some supporters about recent performances. It was a record-breaking start to their Premier League season but struggling against Sporting after consecutive limp league defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle have brought some restlessness to the surface.
