Tens of thousands of Spaniards protested in Madrid yesterday against the prime minister’s bid to remain in power by granting an amnesty to Catalan separatists.
Opposition conservatives called the rally amid concerns that Pedro Sánchez’s proposal poses a threat to Spain’s unity. He is planning an amnesty for those involved in an illegal declaration of independence in 2017 in return for the support of Catalan separatists.
Sánchez needs the seven votes of the right-leaning Together for Catalonia party, led by Carles Puigdemont – still a fugitive living in Belgium – to be able to form a new government after an inconclusive general election in July left the country in political deadlock.
