Andre Onana debut rated as new Man Utd signing shows pros and cons he brings

Erik ten Hag finally got to unleash new signing Andre Onana, and the goalkeeper made a good impression against Real Madrid despite conceding two goals on his debut

Manchester United’s senior side have been unbeatable during pre-season so far, but it took just six minutes for them and new goalkeeper Andre Onana to concede their first goal of the summer, and his first for the club.

United were cut open as a long ball from centre-back Antonio Rudiger found their new £88.5m signing Jude Bellingham, who stayed composed and chipped Onana to open his account for Real Madrid. Onana was frustrated as the United defenders didn’t track Bellingham’s run, but the new goalkeeper was caught stranded as the ball was lofted over him and into the net.

It was an early blip on what otherwise was a very promising debut for the goalkeeper, who barely put a foot wrong for United. However, another goal flew past him with just two minutes remaining, as Madrid substitute Joselu scored an emphatic overhead kick to secure a 2-0 win.

This time Onana was not at any fault, as Lucas Vazquez floated in a delivery to an unmarked Joselu, and his finish was simply outstanding. Onana was once again frustrated with those in front of him, and this time it was a completely different back-four to the ones who let him down in the first half.
