Cruise ships in Amsterdam will no longer be able to dock at the cruise terminal in the city as authorities look to combat overtourism in the area
Cruise ships have been banned from Amsterdam in the latest bid to limit the number of tourists heading to the city.
Amsterdam’s local council has said the vessels are not in line with the city’s sustainable ambitions, and has decided to close the central cruise terminal on the River IJ near Amsterdam’s main train station.
Firms including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, P&O Cruises, Fred Olsen, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises, Hurtigruten, and Princess Cruises could be affected.
The ban on cruise ships comes after the city launched an ad campaign, dubbed ‘Stay Away’, to deter British lads aged 18-35 from visiting, targeting people who search for terms including ‘stag party Amsterdam’ or ‘pub crawl Amsterdam’ with TV and online ads.
