He was struck by the vehicle on Gosford Street before it hit hospital worker Joel Carriedo, 47, as he was cycling home from work following a night shift. Emergency services rushed to the scene but nothing could be done to save either of the men despite the efforts of medics.
A a 33-year-old man who fled the scene on foot after smashing into a house nearby was arrested by police on suspicion of murder. He has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and West Midlands Police are not looking for anybody else in connection with the tragedy.
Leo’s devastated family have now paid tribute to a man who brought ‘fun and laughter’ to everyone. In a statement issued via police, they said: “We are completely heartbroken at the loss of Leo, who was taken from us so soon. Leo was an amazing son, brother, uncle and friend to so many, he brought so much laughter and fun to all of our lives. We are now giving the police time to give us the answers that we will need to understand how and why this happened. This will be the only public statement we will be giving.”
