Alps ski resort closes for good due to lack of snow and high cost of lifts

The La Sambuy ski resort in Seythenex, in the French Alps, has closed for good Mayor Jacques Dalex explained, after bad warming temperatures and bad snow saw the season shrink and shrink

A ski resort has closed its slopes for good due to a lack of snow. The La Sambuy ski resort in Seythenex, France, is permanently closed for business after limping through recent slushy seasons. Global warming has seen the ski season there shrink in recent years as snowfall has become less regular and the blanketing less deep.

Mayor Jacques Dalex told CNN that operating the resort is no longer profitable, after a season which had just four weeks of snow, adding “even then, not much snow”. The resort is located near Mont Blanc in the French Alps. A statement was issued announcing the news that the station would be permanently closed from September, following the decision of the municipal council back in June.

Locals added: “Thank you all for this last summer season of 2023, and for all these wonderful years spent by your side. We hope to see you soon.” The resort was losing the equivalent of £420,000 a year, according to reports. The cost of operating its three ski lifts alone was £68,000 annually. These lifts will now be dismantled and focused turned towards activities that require less snow, such as hiking, rock climbing and paragliding.

La Sambuy was never a huge resort, having just three lifts and a handful of pistes which reached up to 1,850m at their peak. However, it was popular with beginners and families looking to make the most of its relatively cheap ski passes. Last year the poor weather meant that even after a snow fall, “very quickly, stones and rocks appeared on the piste”, Mayor Dalex added.
