I – an emeritus professor of war studies at King’s College London – have come to meet Al Murray, the 54-year-old stand-up comic best known for his Perrier award-winning character the Pub Landlord, in a pub near his home in Chiswick, west London. The Sunday Times has sent me here to meet my unexpected competition.
Murray has a new book out, a serious work of Second World War history, about how Allied generals worked out how to defeat the Germans after a poor start. It is called Command. I have a book out, also called Command. Mine is rather different – focusing on post-1945 conflicts, involving a wide range of countries, and looks at political leaders as well as generals.
