Aaron Rodgers in agreement with New York Jets coach over his future at team

Aaron Rodgers has yet to play a game in the NFL for the New York Jets, but the quarterback is already keen on his partnership with team lasting for years

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh appears to have locked in Aaron Rodgers for the foreseeable future after the quarterback pledged to play for “a few more years” at the franchise. Rodgers teased retirement at the end of last season before going on a four-day darkness retreat to calm his mind and make a decision. He returned and soon left the Green Bay Packers as he was traded to the Jets, and he looks like a new man after making the move. Saleh wanted a veteran quarterback at the end of last season, and got one of the greatest ever in Rodgers. It was expected that Rodgers would just see out the remainder of his two-year extension that was originally signed in Wisconsin, but he’s since restructured his contract and Saleh was optimistic it could see him play for longer. After practice on Tuesday the quarterback addressed the media and admitted: “This is going to be a few years partnership.” Rodgers then stated that he’d keep going for as long as his body lets him, or until the Jets don’t want him.

It’s the news that every Jets fan wanted to hear, and one that will excite Saleh after he revealed that he wanted Rodgers to commit himself long-term, but didn’t want to pressure him. “I don’t want to back him into a corner and make him commit to something like that,” Saleh said.. “I just want him to have fun and know that when he walks in this building to let loose and have a little bit of fun, B.S. with the guys, come in the office, come talk to us and just enjoy playing football. Odds are, if you enjoy playing football, you’re going to want to keep doing it. “I wouldn’t put pressure on him to commit to something like that anyway, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t play multiple years. He looks like a little kid out there.”

It’s great news for the Jets, but it may not be what young quarterback Zach Wilson wanted to hear. Wilson was drafted in 2021 and became the franchise quarterback for the Jets, although he was placed on the non-injury list at times last season. Wilson is still only 23 and has a long career ahead of him in the NFL, but it’s likely he will want to be starting by the age of 25 so that he doesn’t fall behind quarterbacks of a similar age. But if Rodgers does continue to play beyond the initial two years, then Wilson and the Jets will be left with a decision. The Jets will have to decide whether they’ve reached their limit with Rodgers, and if it’s time for them to prioritise Wilson as the long-term option. The Jets may also not see Wilson as a good enough fit, meaning that Rodgers will hold down the quarterback role until they find the right replacement.
