Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams back new Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy golf competition TGL

Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams are among a group of high-profile new backers for the stadium golf venture being launched by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Backed by the PGA Tour, the new TGL (team golf league) competition is seen as a riposte to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, which has shaken up the sport since its launch earlier this year.

Woods and McIlroy announced their new project, TMRW Sports, in August and have unveiled a stellar list of ‘cultural icon investors’ from across the sporting world. Hamilton is one of a number of Formula One drivers on the list, along with Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, while Gareth Bale, Steph Curry and Alex Morgan are also included, as well as figures from the NFL, MLB and NHL.

“I’m excited to welcome a strong group of investors across sports and entertainment to @TMRWSports,” Woods tweeted.

The new golfing format, which will begin in January 2024, will use high technology to squeeze an 18-hole round into two hours on primetime Monday night television in the United States. Pitting six teams of three leading PGA Tour professionals against each other, it will involve players hitting their tee shots and approach shots into a big screen, their distances measured virtually, before each hole is completed in a short-game stadium environment.
